.com celebrates its 25th anniversary
On March 15, 1985, Symbolics Computers registered symbolics.com, the very first domain name in the world. Later that same year, 5 other companies registered a domain name.
Back then, domain names were definitely not as popular as today. It took until 1997 before the one millionth dotcom was registered. Between 1985 and 2000, 21 million dotcoms were registered. From 2000 until today, 57 million new dotcoms were added.
Because of their rarity, the price of good domain names has significantly increased over the past years. Soon, the ICANN, the regulatory authority, plans to introduce new extensions, but some organisations and authorities are not very happy with that idea. We are looking forward to seeing how .com will evolve in the 25 years to come.
