How do I install an SSL certificate?

Installing an SSL certificate on your website or application ensures an encrypted HTTPS connection. Enabling SSL means establishing a secure layer through which you exchange encrypted information. Did you buy SSL through an external party, but want to install the certificate on our hosting? Find out how to do that here.

Why setting up an SSL connection is important

Setting up an SSL certificate means you are making your website extra secure. If you do not use a security certificate, then your website does not have an encrypted connection. This makes it much easier for criminals or hackers to find out certain personal data or payment details and steal them.

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer. Installing an SSL ensures that you send secure information without a third party being able to intercept the info.

If you process orders, or have integrated a take-in form on your site … then the current GDPR rules oblige you to install an SSL certificate. Your HTTPS website will also rank better and thus higher in online search engines.

How to enable SSL

A website with an SSL certificate automatically switches to the secure HTTPS version. So setting up HTTPS is actually the same as enabling SSL. One takes care of the other.

Did you know that you always get a free SSL certificate with Combell’s hosting? By the way, we activate SSL by default on each hosting package. In other words: you do not have to do anything at all.

Is SSL not yet activated on your web hosting with us? Then you can still do it yourself via the control panel.

Follow these steps in the My Combell to enable an SSL connection:

  1. Go to “My products” > “Web hosting” > Your domain name.
  2. In the menu on the left, choose “Domain names & SSL”.
  3. On the right, click “Manage website” and choose “SSL settings” from the dropdown.
  4. Under SSL settings, you can enable SSL here via a free SSL certificate from Let’s Encrypt.

Additionally: you can also activate HTTP/2 and HTTPS forcing. With HTTP/2, your website will work faster. With HTTPS forcing, all your visitors will land on the secure HTTPS version of your website.

To set up an SSL connection, you can also install your own SSL certificate. You can buy such a certificate through us or elsewhere.
