My SSL is pending, now what?

When you apply for or renew your SSL, several checks are performed by an external partner. They do the actual validation of your SSL certificate. This can sometimes take several days. During this validation, your SSL certificate is being processed. So you don’t have to worry.

Handling an SSL with domain validation

An SSL certificate with domain validation checks whether the linked domain name is effectively yours. That is what the DNS record is for.

By installing a DNS record on your domain name, you prove that you are the owner of the domain. The faster you install the DNS record, the faster your SSL will be processed.

Is your domain name hosted by Combell? Then we will fix your DNS record for you.

Handling an SSL with organisation validation

This validation also checks that the domain name is effectively yours through a DNS record. But that is by no means all.

When processing an SSL with organisation validation, more checks are performed. For instance, your company details are checked in a public database such as the CBE. If these details are not up-to-date, your SSL may remain pending for longer.

So make sure that the data are always correctly completed. Make sure you or your contact person has left a phone number of your organisation. This way, the (telephone) validation will not be delayed.

Handling of an SSL with extended validation

With extended validation, in addition to all the checks of an organisation validation, documents are sent for you to sign. As long as you don’t return these, your SSL remains pending.

Good to know: the validation of your SSL is carried out by a reliable but external party. We ourselves have no influence on the duration of the SSL validation.

How long does it take for SSL to work?

The time it takes for an SSL certificate to work can vary from a few hours to a week or more, depending on the type of SSL certificate.

For quick issuance, SSL certificates with domain validation (same day) are the best choice. An SSL certificate with organisation or extended validation (2 days to a week) goes through a more thorough validation process that takes a lot longer.

Please note: We depend on an external partner for our SSL certificates. Due to delays on their side, the process for issuing an SSL certificate sometimes takes longer than indicated here.
